Tempur-Pedic® Mattress
Space-Age Comfort Brought Down to Earth
During the past century, we witnessed incredible technological breakthroughs that improved nearly every area of life. The 1900's saw the invention of airplanes, televisions, microwave ovens, computers, cellular phones, and the Internet. Yet, in the face of such advancements, the place where we spend approximately 8 hours a day-one-third of our lives-has remained virtually unchanged since the innerspring mattress was invented in 1925.
At long last the technology revolution has reached the bedroom-TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material is a breakthrough in sleep technology that will forever change the way you sleep.
The original formula was developed in the early 1970's at NASA's Ames Research
Center in an effort to relieve astronauts of the incredible g-forces experienced
during lift-off. The result was an open-celled, breathable material that was
temperature-sensitive, viscoelastic, and able to distribute pressure or body
weight over the entire surface area.

Fagerdala World Foams of Sweden, one of Europe's largest foam producing companies,
realized the enormous potential of the material and began experiments in the
early 1980's to perfect it for consumer use. After nearly a decade and millions
of research dollars, Fagerdala incorporated the remarkable pressure-relieving
properties of their new TEMPUR® material into a mattress design and began
testing the product in hospitals.
In the three years after its introduction in 1991, the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress sold more than 50,000 units in Sweden alone, a country of 8 million people (about the population of an average U.S. state). Tempur-Pedic® launched the same products in North America in 1992, and has experienced a similar response. Tempur-Pedic® products have been featured on Dateline NBC, CNN's Business Unusual, CNBC's Power Lunch, the Discovery Channel and NBC's Today Show.
Today, the use of TEMPUR® material has expanded to products ranging from
office chairs to seat cushions to bicycle seat covers. Finally, the technology
revolution that changed how we work, travel and communicate is beginning to change
how we sleep, relax, travel and live.
Material
The
cellular structure of the TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material is completely different. It's made up of billions of high density, viscoelastic, memory cells. The cells are spherical with windows, and the key is.they're temperature sensitive. The high density of TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material makes the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress so durable that it's backed by an incredible 20-year limited warranty. In warm areas, they get softer and pliable. In cooler areas, they stay firm. The cells will literally shift position and reorganize to conform to your body contours. The cells shift so we don't have to. Imagine a mattress that's firm where you need it and soft where you want it. It's like having a mattress custom designed to fit your body.
Questions & Answers
| Q: |
What is TEMPUR® material? |
| A: |
It is a viscoelastic, open-celled, temperature and weight sensitive material.
Originally developed for NASA in the 1970s, it was designed to conform
to any individual's body and relieve the pressure of the tremendous G-forces
experienced by astronauts during lift-off and flight. In 1991 a Swedish
company, Fagerdala World Foams, introduced TEMPUR® material,
the vastly improved reinvention of the original NASA formula for home and
medical use.
|
| Q: |
Is TEMPUR® material
different from foam? |
| A: |
TEMPUR® material
is viscoelastic and made up of billions of spherical shaped, open cells
that are temperature and weight sensitive, allowing it to become softer
in warmer areas (where your body is making the most contact with the surface)
and remain firmer in cooler areas (where less body contact is being made).
Therefore, TEMPUR® material is able to conform to any body shape or size-even
the hard to reach lumbar area of your back. Foam is not as sensitive to
temperature and will not conform to your body's unique shape.
|
| Q: |
How Does TEMPUR® material differ from other products claiming to be viscoelastic? |
| A: |
Simple. In most cases, other viscoelastic products have a much lower density, are not as sensitive to your body temperature, are typically too soft to provide any therapeutic support, and do not have the endorsement of over 25,000 medical professionals around the world. TEMPUR® material has a density of 5.34 lb/ft., helping to make it much more durable than others having densities of no more than 3.8 lb/ft. The Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress is backed by a 20-year limited warranty.
|
| Q: |
Will TEMPUR® material make me hot and sweaty or cut off my circulation? |
| A: |
On the contrary. The open-celled physical structure of TEMPUR® material is self-ventilating. Air is able to travel throughout the material and actually dissipate body heat. By eliminating counter pressure, blood flows freely throughout your body without harmful capillary compression and restriction caused by pressure points. Tempur-Pedic® products are currently used by medical facilities around the world to help prevent and cure pressure ulcers that are caused by counter pressure, perspiration, and/or poor circulation.
|
| Q: |
Isn't it better for you to sleep on a hard mattress? |
| A: |
Absolutely not! A hard, nonconforming surface forces your body to adapt to its flat shape, bending your spine into an unnatural position and creating pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and feet, which can cause you to toss and turn trying to find a more comfortable position. The result: lower back pain and less restful sleep.
|
| Q: |
Is there a "breaking-in" or "adjustment" period associated with your product? |
| A: |
Most customers are very comfortable the very first night. Others may need a few nights to get used to the increased support they experience in their lumbar or lower-back area.
|
| Q: |
Is there any research to prove that Tempur-Pedic® is effective? |
| A: |
There have been multiple scientific studies done to document the "miracle like" results of sleeping on the Tempur-Pedic® mattress, including studies by the Institution for Clinical & Physiological Research at Lillhagen Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden and the University of Maine. Clinical studies indicate that the Tempur-Pedic® mattress cuts the average nighttime tossing and turning by more than 70%!
|
| Q: |
Does the Tempur-Pedic® mattress require any special care or protective pad? |
| A: |
None whatsoever. And, unlike conventional mattresses, it never needs to be turned or rotated. The anti-allergy treated cover features a fully breathable liquid-barrier lining to protect the TEMPUR® material and is zippered on all four sides for easy removal and washing. Tempur-Pedic's® cover is so advanced that it eliminates the need for conventional mattress pads altogether.
|
| Q: |
Can Tempur-Pedic® products help reduce the effects of allergies? |
| A: |
Tempur-Pedic® products are 100% CFC-free and allergy resistant. Tempur-Pedic® mattresses and pillows feature our specially treated cover that helps make them resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew, mites, and odor-causing germs.
